I have one little problem about GUS + Mitsumi FX001D CD-ROM
I use the CD-ROM interface which comes with CD-ROM and when I use
Windows CD-PLAYER, I can't control the VOLUME when I play CD.
I try many kinds of CD-PLAYERs, but all of them appear the same thing.
Can somebody tell me WHY !??? Thanks a lot !!!

About 1 out of every 5 or 6 times I run Doom, it dies during startup
with the message "Divide overflow". Has anyone else seen this occur?
It seems to happen while patches are being loaded into the GUS. I can
usually remedy the situation by rebooting and trying again, although
sometimes I have to reboot twice before it will start the game.
I mention this because I have seen lockups during the game discussed
many times (I also get these lockups), but I have never seen discussion
of the "Divide overflow" lockup before the game starts.

anything about Chicago unless they are running it on their own desktop
right this minute.
AS for my, my gus is working fine under os/2... right now!

The 2.4 board is an old revision, but there's nothing wrong with it.
It's lacking the new mixer found in revision 3.7 GUSes, but most GUS
users are in the same boat.

Avoid IRQ 7, since it's been found to be problematic for many people,
me included. The base address should be 220h so that the GUS emulates
the SB on that address.
> 4) What utils should I FTP?
The latest GUS drivers (gus0041a/b). Be sure to delete your SBOS files
and ultrasnd.ini before you install the new software, though.

First of all, welcome aboard! The GUS is a great deal, and I'm sure you'll
love it if you have a LITTLE BIT of endurance.
> 1) I got a rev 2.4 board. Is that normal? Should I complain?
Rev 2.4s are about the same as the newest except for line-in mixing or supm'
like that. I got a GUS 2.4 when I bought one in Israel, and I had no problems
running anything from Windows to Hell (no, not OS/2, the Hell demo, dorks) on
it.

This sucks!
Well, those ten bucks are worth their while, beleive me. PC is the easiest
sequencer around.
> 3) How should I setup my GUS for ease of use with most programs?
> IRQs, DMAs, port addresses, etc....
What I did is set it up as P220, both DMA 1, both IRQ 7, and create a little
DOSKey macro (a batch file could do too) called u11 which consists of:
set ultrasnd=220,1,1,11,7
ultrinit
To get the GUS set up for things like DMP and Epic Pinball. Under Windows I
think I use DMA 1, IRQ 5, since my scanner craps out on anything else.
> 4) What utils should I FTP?
FTP to archive.orst.edu, pub/packages/gravis/gravis, and get gus0041 (both
parts). This will upgrade your software to version 3.1.
You should also get 2PAT (version 1.0 at the moment) which opens MODs and
friends and creates samples from them. Also check out the PCMag utility
KBMIDI for Windows (ftp.cica.indiana.edu, pub/pc/win3/sounds). This little
app lets you play music on your keyboard and it's also useful for 2PAT since
you can check out the samples using that keyboard.
Get GUSAIL14 and GAIL3214 to use Miles drivers in games. Get the Sierra
driver for Sierra games.
> 5) Some basic Do's and Dont's for the GUS and for using it with
> various games. (Yes, I know about the Glist! :)
OK. When you get the game, check for many small files called ???.ADV, bearing
names such as SBFM or PASOPL. This is your break since this game uses AIL
drivers. The readme in the AIL archive contains more info.
If you can't find any, run the game's setup utility and check if it supports
General MIDI. More preferrably, GM plus Sound Blaster for effects. If it
can, EXIT THE UTILITY, run Mega-Em, ENTER THE UTILITY and set up the sound
support. You have to do this because those devices don't really exist before
MegEm's loaded.
If all you can get is SB or nutt'n, run SBOS and write hate-mail to the
publishers.
Happy GUSsing, and we're here for you!
Yossi.

Subject: I need info. on installed base of soundcards
G'day all,
I was wondering if anyone out there knew the number of users of all
major soundcards. (SB, SB16, WaveBlaster, PAS, and GUS) Now, I
realize the numbers may be approximate, but I just need a ballpark figure.
The reason I ask is, I'm going to mail Origin on CI$ (and PERSONALLY
talk to Richard Garriott and Warren Spector at CES this June) and SHOW
them that the GUS is not this minor little soundcard that can be
ignored, it has thousands of users that are getting pissed off that
some major companies are STILL not supporting it, after almost two
years of mainstream existance. Yet, in Ultima 8, there's the option
for the WaveBlaster, which I'm sure does not have nearly the installed
base that the GUS has. But to prove it, I need concrete figures.
Mail to me directly, and I'll post a summary in a few weeks.
Thanks!

Subject: No Mouse in USS8
I don't recall anyone ever having this particular problem before, so I thought
I'd post it and see what came up.
For some strange reason, I never get a visible mouse pointer when I try using
USS8 (I hope I have that name right...I'm talking about the DOS based recording
program shipped with the GUS - 2.06a disks). The mouse IS active, because if I
move it in an upper-left direction and then to the right with the button down,
I can activate the menus along the top of the screen; I just can't SEE the mouse
pointer.
My mouse is an older Mouse Systems (optical) mouse. I've never had any problems
with it in DOS programs before, including the GUS setup, playmidi, etc. It
really seems to me that its a problem with USS8.
Has anyone ever heard of this problem before (or have a fix for it)?
Thanks!

Does anyone know how to use SBOS with Police Quest II from Sierra. All I
get is an error message saying that my music card can't be initialized. I
think I've tried every SBOS option there is, and even the -x2
(recommended by Gravis) doesn't work. Has anyone got it to work? If so,
please contact me.
P.S. It will work if I select Adlib music, but you don't get any
synthesized speech.

Subject: Seawolf!!!
OK, Just got Seawolf. It has GUS support via Ultramid, and it sounds quite
good. A nice thing is that it comes with a tester in the installing routine so
that you can hear it the set up sounds right or not. Nice touch. The sound
effects in the sonar suite is in stereo, and are very effective. I only wish
they would have supported the GUS natively and use all the pan positions. But
as it is, it is still very impressive. Some gripes, however, during the game,
the music will play a ver annoying "static/ metal noise like" sound (like
tuning a radio, and you get white noise). It is really horrible, but I am not
sure what is causing it. It pops up from time to time, and I think it is
associated with a certain patch. After paying the game for a few hours, I
think I am finding a pattern in when that aweful screech occurs, but I think
I'll go back and check with other setup to see if it helps. Secondly,
whenever I go to the sonar room for the waterfall display, it takes away
keyboard control for some reason. It gets really annoying when you are in
close duking it out with Ivans and a fish on your tail. I also noticed that
it reverse my CAPS lock key when it does that (after I exit the game, the
caps lock was on even though I didn't depress the key, and that it change
bnack to normal when I go to C: drive <the game is in d: drive>).
In any case, this is a very good game. Plays very much like 688 Attack Sub.
If only I have more control of the sub....sigh...

Technical Support does not have Gravis Ultra Sound drivers for the DOS
versions of our SCI32 products at this time, nor do we know when, or if,
such drivers will be released. At this time, GUS users can play these games
in Windows, assuming that the correct GUS drivers have been installed in the
Windows environment. If you are encountering difficulties with your sound
card in Windows, contact Gravis for assistance in properly
installing the necessary drivers and patch maps for your particular GUS card.
If and when such drivers are available, they will be posted on our BBS and
AOL and will be available through our Technical Support Department. However,
at this time they are not available and we have no information about when
these drivers may become available.
Good luck and happy gaming!

I downloaded the patch for Ultima 8 and it only contains a
music driver. The documentation said no digital support was planned.
Is it that difficult to program a driver for Origin Games?
I noticed that The Horde and Microcosm are 2 new CD Rom games
that support the GUS. Has anyone tried them yet?
